This is what I’m aiming for. His-and-her 3' vanities instead of our one 4.5' vanity that awkwardly lumps under our window and is way too close to the toilet, which I consider too small as it is. Plumbing is all there already. I really want a full mud pan with an 18" bench and a glass shower door, but we’ll see where the budget takes us. May settle for a full fiberglass insert. But no more damn old gross ugly ass tub tub from 3 decades ago.

The timeline is to get this done in 2017. Remodel one room per year = eventually a decent home!

Sounds like a plan to me.

My house was built in 1957, and features a pink tile bathroom with a single sink and a cast iron tub. I would love to rip it out and install modern this n’ that and a real shower stall, but it’s almost 100 percent perfectly preserved and 60 years old. Pink or not, I can’t bring myself to do anything but continue keeping it nice.

Luckily (or not) I don’t have that problem. This house was questionably remodeled in the ‘80s, presumably by a half-blind man, and in general is a hilarious mishmash of various stages of bad ideas.

I thought his and hers vanities was a good idea. In reality it has become hers and hers vanities with a little space carved out for his toothbrush. My glass shower door is a maintainence nightmare but I wouldn’t trade it - I love the look.

Is it your only bathroom?

I took ours down to studs a couple years ago and oh man old houses with bad wiring and shitty plumbing. Not fun. But the end result is enjoyable when you don’t have to share a sink.

I can only imagine the surprises that lurk beneath the sheetrock!

It is our only bathroom. I had all the wiring in the house redone last year, and plumbing inspected several times.

[has horrific flashbacks crawling under my house]

Should be fun! I need to reinsulate and replace the moisture barrier under the house. So many spiders!

For the record, I am emotionally preparing myself for uncovering something awful — like water damaged subfloor or joists devoured by bugs. There’s almost incentive to do nothing at all to our house and just cash in on the equity...

Yeah that happened to us too. I had to replace a fair amount of wood and re mediate some mold issues. The floor still isn’t level with the hallway. When I opened the wall where vanity was there was a stack of used safety razor blades inside the wall. I guess back in the 60's after a gentleman was done shaving and the blade was old they would just slip the razor into a slot in the wall and forget about it.

Problem with cashing in on equity is that inventory is so low. I’m seeing 9 way cash bidding wars going on at work. It’s nuts!
